Our Formation
FORMATION OF “THE BOMBAY FOUNTAIN PEN MANUFACTURERS & TRADERS ASSOCIATION”
The year was 1962. India was engaged in a girm war with China. Many institutions came forward to raise Funds to strengthen India’s war efforts and to boost the morale of our JAWANS.
This inspired a few members of our Fountain Pens Trade and Industry to come together and with the spontaneous and enthusiastic co-operation of our business people, collected a War Fund of Rs,1,08,000:00 (Rupees One Lakh Eight Thousand Only).
Since this time, the idea was shaping up to form an Association. This would canalize such our noble efforts as stated above in an organized manner to promote co-operation between Trade and Industry and to look after the problems of Fountain Pen Trade and solve them to its advantage and advancement.
But it was not until the Fountain Pen Business faced its own problem, that the idea of having an Association finally materialised. The Government of Maharashtra had unjustly raised Sales Tax on Pens from 6% to 8% by misinterpreting the entry in the Sales Tax schedule. This was unreasonable and injust. It was therefore necessary to protest against this injustice and seek redress for the benefit of all concerned. This could be done only through a representative body of Fountain Pen Trade and Industry.
Hence on 19th March, 1968, a few prominent persons called a meeting of our business community which was held on 25th March, 1968. In this meeting decision was taken to promote an Association. This meeting was attended by 17 persons who decided to launch an Association named ‘‘The Bombay Fountain Pen Trade Association”.
An adhoc committee was appointed to draft Memorandum and Articles of Association. The committee prepared these drafts in record time.
A few meetings were held in between to study the drafts and suggest amendments. When the final draft was approved by committee, a General Meeting was called by the promoters to adopt the constitution.
Thus on 22nd June, 1968, THE BOMBAY FOUNTAIN PEN MANUFACURERS AND TRADERS ASSOCIATION was officially founded in the presence of 47 members.
CHANGE OF NAME TO “PEN & STATIONERY ASSOCIATION OF INDIA”
On 29th march 2017 in special general meeting is for decided to change the name of the association from “The Bombay Fountain Pen Manufacturers & Traders Association” to “Pen & Stationery Association of India” considering the following advantages associated with new name:-
- Name of the association is not suitable in present context.
- Most of the manufacturers & traders had diversified their activities apart from pens they had included other stationery item in their activities
- Since we had member across the country our name should suggest pan India presence.
Because of activities of the association, soon it become the pan India association.
At present we have a 700+ members across the country.
